NEWS RELEASEREP. QUILLEN: TIME TO RETIREPosted: April 4, 2004 State Rep. George R. “Bobby” Quillen, a Harrington Republican, has announced he will not seek re-election to his 30th District seat this fall. A fixture in the state House of Representatives who has served for at least a portion of each decade since the 1960s, Rep. Quillen said he has been considering leaving office for a while. “Then I found out I wasn’t in the best of health, which gave me even more thought on the subject. I checked with my doctor, and he suggested I not seek re-election because I needed my strength,” Quillen said. Rep. Quillen is one of the General Assembly's longest-tenured members and is also among a select few that have won office, left the General Assembly, and then later returned. He was first elected in 1966, the earliest initial term-of-office of any currently serving state legislator. After three consecutive terms, he left for a decade. He won re-election in 1982 and is currently serving his 14th term of two years. From 1992 to 1996, he held the post of House majority whip. “It’s been quite rewarding,” Rep. Quillen said. “I’m going to miss it, no doubt about it.” ### |
