Only in Delaware is an account of modern state politics from the end of World War II until the close of the 20th Century, covering the elections, politicians and events of the time.

It tracks the Big Eight, the men who more than anyone shaped the policies and politics of the second half of the century, dividing the age into the Carvel-Williams-Boggs era, the Roth-du Pont-Biden era and the Castle-Carper era.

The book does not necessarily have to be read from front to back. It is designed for readers to start anywhere, to find out about the politicians they love or loathe. The idea is that readers will be curious enough to learn more, to want to know "what comes next?" or "what came before?"

Someone, for example, with little interest in the earlier years but perhaps a great deal in Democratic Sen. Joseph R. Biden Jr. may decide to read more, after all, about J. Caleb Boggs, the Republican defeated by Biden in 1972 after an impressive 26 years in statewide office. Cale Boggs does not deserve to be forgotten, and there are plenty of others like that.

Only in Delaware is not a tell-all book, but it is a tell-a-lot book. It does not set out to embarrass anybody, but if history embarrasses someone, then so be it.
