MINNER: MORE KNEE SURGERY SCHEDULED

Posted: Sept. 29, 2006

Gov. Ruth Ann Minner again will undergo routine knee replacement surgery on Monday, Oct. 9, this time to replace the joint in her right knee.

Minner, a second-term Democrat, will have the surgery at Bayhealth Medical Center-Kent General Hospital in Dover. After a few days at Kent General, she will be released from the hospital and expects to take part in regular physical therapy sessions for several weeks.

Dr. Steven Tooze, the Dover surgeon who will perform the operation, expects Minner to come through the procedure as well as she did the last time, based on her previous commitment to physical therapy and her good health overall. Minner had surgery to repair her left knee in October 2003.

“The governor was an excellent patient three years ago and worked hard on her rehabilitation, which resulted in a very positive outcome,” Tooze said. “I would anticipate the same successful outcome this time around.”

Minner said she plans to resume conducting state business by phone and with staff the day after the surgery. She will return to her regular meeting and public events schedule as soon as possible, probably just a few weeks after surgery.

“I was so pleased with the results of my first knee replacement that I’m anxious to have this second surgery performed so I can start my physical therapy as soon as possible,” Minner said.
