BIDEN: MEMORIAL DAY TRAVEL TO MID EAST AND AFRICA

U.S. Senator Joseph R. Biden Jr. will travel to the Middle East and Africa over the Memorial Day weekend to observe elections in Lebanon, meet with U.S. forces and the Iraqi leadership in Baghdad, and tour refugee camps in Chad along the border of Darfur, Sudan.

In Beirut, following a briefing from the U.S. ambassador, Biden will meet the political and military leadership and activists from several Lebanese political parties, including Prime Minister Nagib Mikati.

In Baghdad, Biden will visit with U.S.General David Petraeus, head of the training operation for Iraqi troops, and Ambassador James Jeffrey. Biden also will meet with top Iraqi officials, including President Jalal Talabani and Prime Minister Ibrahim Jafari. In addition, Biden will visit with U.S. troops, including a contingent from Delaware.

In Chad, Biden will travel to the border of Sudan, where thousands of refugees from the Darfur region are living in camps run by the United Nations, and also will go to the capital to meet with President Idriss Deby.

This trip will be the fifth to Iraq in the last two years but the first to Chad and Sudan for Biden, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
