NEWS RELEASECALIO: ELECTION COMMISSIONER RETIRING IN JUNEPosted: Nov. 30, 2006 Frank B. Calio, the state election commissioner since January 2002, informed Gov. Ruth Ann Minner on Wednesday that he would retire at the end of June. Calio notified the governor by letter in July of his intentions, but both agreed to wait until after the 2006 election to announce his plans. Calio said he wanted to stay through the legislative and budget session to have everything in order for a new election commissioner to take over for the 2008 election. Minner, a two-term Democrat, will appoint the next commissioner, subject to confirmation by the state Senate. Calio, who has been through seven elections, called his post the best job he ever had but the most stressful. He expects the next election to have the largest voter turnout in Delaware history with a plateful of important races, including a presidential primary and presidential election, as well as contests for the U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives, open seats for governor and lieutenant governor, plus state insurance commissioner, New Castle County executive, Wilmington mayor, the General Assembly and local offices. ### |
