NEWS RELEASECARPER: CONTRIBUTIONS GOING TO CHARITY BECAUSE OF ABRAMOFFPosted: Jan. 5, 2006 U.S. Sen. Thomas R. Carper issued the following statement on campaign contributions: “I have no relationship with Jack Abramoff, nor does any of my staff. I have never met him, never spoken with him or ever received any direct contributions from him or solicited by him. My campaign has, however, received $7,077 in contributions over the last five years from Indian Tribes and registered lobbyists who are members of the same firm as Mr. Abramoff. Each of these contributions were perfectly legal and, to my knowledge, not directed by Mr. Abramoff. “However, in order to dispel any perception that there has been any wrongdoing, I have directed my campaign committee and PAC to make a charitable donation today to the Boys & Girls Club of Delaware in the amount of $7,077 – an amount equal to that which our records indicate we received from the two Indian Tribes who were once represented by Mr. Abramoff and from the two registered lobbyists – both Democrats and one that I have known personally for 20 years – who were members of the same law firm as Mr. Abramoff. I sincerely hope this will not reflect negatively on the integrity of the organizations or individuals who have made legal contributions to my campaign in good faith.” The contribution from Carper, a first-term Democrat, to the Boys & Girls Club of Delaware will be put toward the Riverfest event. A major part of the proceeds from this event goes to help the Oak Orchard Boys & Girls Club in Sussex County, serving a number of the children from the Nanticoke Tribe. ### |
