CARPER: STATEMENT
ON WELLSTONE
Posted: Oct. 28, 2002
Wilmington - Senator Tom Carper will attend the memorial
service for United States Senator Paul Wellstone tomorrow, October
29, in Minnesota. Carper issued the following statement after
learning of the death of Senator Paul Wellstone:
“Paul came from a more liberal part of the Democratic party than I
do and he’s never shy about saying so. I didn’t know him well when I
entered the Senate and I had not expected to see much of a
friendship emerge. I was wrong. While we disagreed on some of the
issues, I came to respect him and to like him a great deal.
He
had a heart as big as Minnesota. He was a humble man who took the
work that we did very seriously but didn’t take himself too
seriously. He had a wonderful sense of humor and we all learned so
much from him.
Paul
was as caring and decent a human being as any with which I’ve
served. He loved serving the people of Minnesota and he loved his
family. He had such a great sense of humor and as great a passion
for public service as any I have seen. He will be missed.”
